Discover Montenegro: Key Experiences from Lake Skadar to Durmitor

We chose to visit Montenegro as it’s a visa-free destination with a UK BRP and relatively cheaper than other European countries. Beyond that, we didn’t know what else to expect.

Over the course of 5 days, we found ourselves completely captivated by Montenegro’s stunning landscapes, rich culture, and peaceful atmosphere. This blog highlights our personal experiences and recommendations around Montenegro, aiming to inspire you.

Before we dive into our adventure, we just want to share some tips based on our personal experience which hopefully helps streamline your trip!

💡Essential Travel Tips

(Based on our personal experience. Make sure to do your own research before travelling.)

Day 1: Virpazar – Lake Skadar

We started our adventure in the picturesque village of Virpazar, nestled by the stunning Lake Skadar. The laid-back vibe made it a perfect first stop, with friendly locals and cute shops.

There are several stalls which offer activities like self-guided kayaking and group boat tours. We highly recommend going for a boat tour! We pre-booked ours via GetYourGuide. An unforgettable experience you won’t regret!

The breath-taking natural beauty of Lake Skadar unfolded as we glided across its tranquil waters, vibrant waterlilies dotting the surface and towering mountains framing the lake.

💡For a truly immersive experience, consider kayaking, and don’t miss the nearby fortress for panoramic views!

Day 2: Budva – Sun, Sand, and Nightlife

Next, we headed to Budva, Montenegro’s vibrant seaside town. The coast was buzzing with energy, lined with countless restaurants, and various water activities you can choose from.

One thing we highly regret is skipping the boat trip to Hawaii Beach – 💡 make sure to add this to your itinerary!

We explored Budva’s charming Old Town: a maze of cobblestone streets and ancient buildings rich in history.

The scenic Mogren Beach provided tranquil and crystal-clear waters, offering a brief escape from Budva’s bustling atmosphere. As the day faded, we returned to the waterfront for drinks, watching the town transform as the night came alive.

Budva is the place to experience the vibrant, energetic side of Montenegro.

💡 Travel Tip: It’s a good idea to make reservations if you’re travelling during peak season (late June – early September)

Day 3: Kotor – A Serene Escape

From Budva, we made our way to Kotor. This shift in atmosphere couldn’t have been more perfect!

This UNESCO World Heritage site is like stepping back in time. The peaceful, medieval town is nestled between the mountains and the Bay of Kotor, offering some of the most panoramic views we’ve ever seen. Our accommodation had a balcony with a view of the mountains, which made for some seriously spectacular mornings!

💡 We recommend climbing the ancient Kotor Fortress for panoramic views of the bay.

In the evening, we went for a boat ride out to the Adriatic coast, adrenaline surged as we navigated the crashing waves. We caught a glimpse of historical sites like Fort Luštica and Mamula Island before stopping at the iconic Our Lady of the Rocks.

Highly recommend going at sunset! The golden hues and mountain backdrop transformed the scenery into a painting. The day was a perfect blend of adventure and romantic aura.

Day 4: Durmitor National Park – The Trip Highlight!

A major stop on our trip was Durmitor National Park, home to the spectacular Black Lake. This was, without a doubt, THE highlight of our trip!

We took a guided tour from Kotor to the National Park. Along the way, we made stops to see a viewpoint of Budva, the Moraca Monastery, and the Tara Bridge.

Surrounded by dense pine forests and towering peaks, Black Lake is an outdoor lover’s paradise. We took a rowboat out onto the lake and fully embraced the magical beauty surrounding us. The experience was surreal as we glided across the crystal-clear water. It was like a dream!

There’s something humbling about being in such a vast natural wonder. We wished we could stay longer as Durmitor has so much to offer. It was hard to leave which is why we’re determined to return one day!

Last Day: Bar

Before heading back to Podgorica for our flight home, we made a quick stop in Bar. Bar had a quieter, more local feel compared to Budva, which made it a relaxing place to end our trip. We spent the evening lounging by the sea, soaking up the sun, and reflecting on our adventure.

As the day drew to a close, everyone settled in for the sunset. It was such a beautiful moment. Truly a perfect end to our trip.

In just 5 days, Montenegro amazed us with its stunning landscapes and rich experiences. From tranquil waters of Lake Skadar to the remarkable nature of Durmitor, the country offers a bit of everything.

The people were hospitable and the local cuisines were delicious, with its vibrant flavours and fresh ingredients – a blend of Mediterranean and Balkan influences.

With its perfect mix of adventure, culture, and relaxation, Montenegro has become one of our favourite travel destinations. We already can’t wait to return!
